Levels and testing
Build your level ladder with a skills checklist for each level, tick off skills in class, and run testing events that move students up.

Levels give your students a path to follow. You set up a ladder of levels, each with a checklist of skills and what it takes to test out of it. Teachers tick off skills from the class roster, and when students are ready, you register them for a testing event and record who moves up. Families see their child's progress in the portal.
Don't see it in the menu? An owner or admin can turn on Levels and testing in Settings, under General › Sections.
Open levels and testing#
Open Classes in the menu, then choose Levels & testing. Until you have levels, the page shows only Set up your ladder. After that it lists your Testing events, with the Ladder below them.
Set up the ladder#
-
On the Levels & testing page, find the Ladder section. If you already have levels, select Edit ladder. When you're finished, select Done.
-
If you have no levels yet, you can select Start with, which adds a suggested set of levels for your kind of studio. Or type a name under Add a level, like "Level 1", and select Add level. Add your levels from first to last.
-
Use Up and Down to change the order.
-
For each level, set what it takes before testing out of it:
- Weeks in level: how long a student must be at this level. 0 asks for none.
- Classes attended: how many classes they must attend at this level.
Select Save on the level when you change these.
-
Under Add a skill to (the level's name), type a skill and select Add skill. Repeat for each skill on the level's checklist.
To take a skill off a checklist, select the × on it. To take a level off the ladder, select Remove next to the level, then Remove again. Anyone at that level keeps it on their record, but it no longer has a place on the ladder or a checklist.
A student's level is the Level you enter when you add them, or the level you move them to later (see below). It counts on the ladder when it matches the name of one of your levels.
Tick off skills in class#
When a class's level is on your ladder and has skills, its Roster tab shows a skills sheet.
- Open Classes in the menu and open the class.
- Choose the Roster tab and find the skills card for the class's level.
- Tick a skill when a student has it. Each tick saves on its own.
See a student's progress#
- Open Students in the menu, open the menu at the end of the student's row and choose View Profile.
- In the Students card, choose the student's tab and find Levels and skills.
You'll see their level, how long they've been in it, how many classes they've attended, and either Ready to test for the next level or what is still missing. The checklist shows each skill as Done or To do, along with any upcoming tests and open classes at their level.
To move a student to another level by hand, choose it under Move to… and select Move. Their time in the level starts again from today.
Create a testing event#
- On the Levels & testing page, select New testing event.
- Enter a Name, like "Spring testing", and the Date.
- Enter the Testing fee. Leave it empty for no fee.
- Select Create.
New testing event appears once the ladder has levels: testing moves a student from one level to the next.
Register students#
- Open the testing event and select Register students.
- Tick the students who are testing. The list shows each student with a level who isn't registered yet.
- If a student hasn't met everything their level asks for yet, tick Register even if not yet ready to register them anyway.
- Select Register.
If the event has a fee, each family is charged it when their student is registered.
The event's list shows each student, the levels they're Testing for, and their Readiness: Ready, or what they're still missing.
Record results#
After the testing, choose a Result for each student:
- Passed: the student moves up to the level they tested for, and their time in the level starts again.
- Not yet: they stay at their level.
- Absent: they didn't come.
Changing a result later doesn't move a student again. Once every result is in, the event is marked Completed.
To call off a testing event before it happens, select Cancel event.
What families see#
In the portal, each student on your ladder has a Levels and skills card on the Family page. It shows their level, the checklist with each skill Done or To do, what is left before the next level, any testing they're registered for, and the classes open at their level.
